Want a Dog as a Pet?
Before you fully decide you want a dog there are several things that you need to consider. The first thing to consider is— do you have a lifestyle that can handle a dog? For example, if you work from 8 in the morning to 10 at night then a getting dog probably would not be a great idea for you. Your lifestyle can include the job hours you work, activities you and your family enjoy doing, where you spend most of your time and what you prefer to do during the day.
The second thing to consider is are you ready to make a commitment to a living creature? When you get a dog you are committing to taking it to the vet which can get expensive, feeding it a quality diet, taking time out of your day to exercise/train it, grooming/bathing it, and keeping your dog until it passes away or you can no longer take care of it.
A third thing to consider before getting a dog– are there any activities you would like the dog to be able to do? For example, going for hikes or long walks, going swimming, going to crowded public places, doing work as a therapy dog, being a good obedience dog, or just be a good tv watching companion. Another thing to consider is where do you live such as a home, an apartment, or a rental property. Sometimes apartments and rental properties owner will set limits on the size of your dog, number of dogs/pets you can have, and the breed of dog you can have.
There are other things that could be considered, but the last thing I am going to talk about that needs to be considered is do you have any children or young relatives that come to your house? This needs to be considered because some dogs may not be the best choices with children. For example, a very large dog could possibly hurt a small child just by playing. Also, if children are not shown how to properly play with a dog they could annoy the dog, get too rough with it, or accidentally hurt it. Lastly, dog ownership is something that should not be taken lightly, so do all your research before you decide to be a dog owner. (Visit AKC.org for More Info)
